The Problem with Compressed Air

Although it might feel “free”—after all, it just comes out of a hose—compressed air is anything but cheap. Here’s why:

1. Energy waste
   Up to 90% of the energy required to generate compressed air is lost as heat. Only a small fraction actually gets used for its intended purpose. That makes it one of the least efficient energy forms in production.
2. High operational costs
   Compressors consume a lot of electricity and require frequent maintenance: filter changes, leak checks, oil separation, and more. These costs add up—often unnoticed.
3. Leaks are common and costly
   Compressed air systems are notoriously leaky. A small 3 mm leak can cost thousands of euros annually in wasted energy.
4. Noise and contamination
   Compressed air systems are loud and can blow dust or moisture onto products or into machinery—leading to potential quality or hygiene issues.
5. Overuse and inefficiency
   Compressed air is often used where it’s not needed, or at much higher force than required—simply because it’s available. This leads to wasted energy, faster wear and tear, and the risk of product damage.
